Supporting Mental Health in our Practices

Working in the veterinary profession is incredibly rewarding, but we also know it can be challenging, both emotionally and physically. That’s why supporting the mental health and wellbeing of our team is an important part of creating a positive, compassionate workplace.

We are fortunate to have three trained Mental Health First Aiders (MHFAs) within our practice – Claire, Faye and Judi. They are available to provide a confidential, non-judgemental listening ear, offer initial support, and help colleagues find the most appropriate resources if further assistance is needed. While they are not counsellors, they play an important role in helping to foster a culture where it’s okay to talk about mental health and seek support.

In addition to our Mental Health First Aiders, all team members have access to our Employee Assistance Programme (EAP). This confidential service provides professional advice, counselling and practical support for a wide range of issues, including stress, anxiety, financial concerns, family matters and workplace challenges.

We also recognise the value of specialist support within the veterinary profession and regularly signpost our team to organisations such as Vetlife, which offers confidential support, information and resources specifically for people working in veterinary practice.

Creating a positive workplace is about the little things as well as the formal support available. Throughout the practice, we have team notice boards where colleagues can leave supportive, encouraging and appreciative messages for one another. Whether it’s recognising someone’s hard work, thanking a colleague for their help, or simply sharing a kind word, these messages help to build team spirit and remind us to celebrate each other’s contributions.

Mental wellbeing is an ongoing priority, not just something we focus on during awareness campaigns. By encouraging open conversations, reducing stigma, recognising one another’s efforts and ensuring support is easily accessible, we hope to create an environment where everyone feels safe, valued and supported. Looking after ourselves and each other helps us to continue providing the highest standard of care to our patients and their owners.
